CAMBI(O)A
Cambio: “change” in the Spanish language
Κάμπια: the stage that precedes the butterfly
The project bears an ambiguous title, where “cambio” contains the Greek word κάμπια (caterpillar), and κάμπια in turn contains “cambio”. It is a dance solo born from the need to speak about the process of change.
From the moment we are born and for as long as we live, situations, conditions, education, and environment shape us. This shaping becomes our very skin, assimilated by our physical body to such an extent that it sometimes dethrones the spirit we truly are. We become caterpillars, attached to the perishability of our mortal existence, until a moment, a being, an incident, or an event reminds us that we are something beyond our conditioning—and that is where the journey of transformation begins. Just as the caterpillar liquefies inside its cocoon to become a butterfly, so too is complete deconstruction—complete liquefaction of our shaping—a one-way path for human existence, which brings about change, and change is freedom.
Acrobat Nikos Garozis, clad in the symbol of the molding that immobilizes him—a cast made of plaster—presents on stage a personal journey toward liberation, which is both a necessity for him and perhaps a call to each of us as spectators.
Contributors to this dance journey include:
Niki Paloumpi, in costume design, Archlabyrinth, in creating the stage environment, Konstantis Papakonstantinou, composer of the original music. The performance also includes two tracks by Thanasis Papakonstantinou, used with his permission, and lyrics by Giorgos Garozis.
Zeta Spyraki is responsible for the lighting design.
Olga Spyraki created the choreography and dramaturgy.
The production is by A.M.K.E. Saltibagos.
